Tonight at 10:00 PM Eastern, Q-Tip steps aside for DJ Lady S, a Belgian import who is internationally known and locally accepted. Yours truly will contribute with announcing chores while Lady S brings that Belgian heat. C ya on the radio. Exclusively on Beats 1!
I got my start in the record business when the late Joey Robinson hired me to work college radio for Soul City’s Sugar Hill Records. The first record I was entrusted to nurture was “The Message” by the eventual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Back then, the DJ was the draw in hip hop, and Flash was the biggest headliner there was. Pioneering hip hop journalist, John Leland profiles my old friend Flash in the latest NY Times Magazine.
Rudy Van Gelder, arguably the greatest engineer of jazz recordings in the history of the music; the audio architect who sonically designed historic albums by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Smith, Bob James, George Benson, Eumir Deodato and of course John Coltrane’s landmark “A Love Supreme” is dead at the age of 91. A true American titan is gone. He put the Soul in Soul City. I am crushed. R.I.P.
